I’ve had a cold for most of the week. I went in Monday even though my throat wasn’t feeling well because I had already maxed out my sick days, and may have infected other employees because of it. As of Tuesday morning my throat was killing me and I could barely get out of bed, so I called in sick and connected up to do some work remotely in the afternoon. On Wednesday I was feeling better, just a sniffle, so I went in again. By nightfall I had gotten worse as the cold went into my chest and head. Today I’m just a mess and there was no way I could go to work.

How many sick days are other people allotted at their workplaces? I get 5 per year, and I don’t think it’s enough.

Oh, and my chest pain from last week is pretty much gone. I think I’ve been sleeping on my front with my hand right there, so must have accidentally poked myself while I slept.

I watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire last week, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this weekend.

HP4 was good, 4 out of 5 stars. Even though I haven’t read the book yet, they obviously had to cut a lot out. One glaring change was the lack of John Williams’ always-great music, although Patrick Doyle’s score was all right.

Chronicles of Narnia 1 was good, 3 out of 5 stars. The movie started out a 5, then lost a star when the beaver spoke. The technology to make animals talk and look natural is not *quite* there, but it’s close. Its score dropped to 3 when I realized they were making the battles kid-friendly; the only blood you see in the movie is when someone gets their lip cut. I know it’s a kid’s story, but if you’re looking for Lord of the Rings (the trailers are definitely offering this movie in the same vein), this isn’t it.

I have tried two of the new DVD players that also support playback of DivX-encoded video files. Both have problems with even basic DVDs, much less burnt DVD-Rs or AVI files. The two players I tried were the RJTech RJ-700DVX (artifacts on screen and sound synch problems with DVD-Rs) and the Kosch DV-X721C (unacceptable pauses on commercial DVDs and poor AVI playback).

Anybody found a good DVD player that also supports DVD-Rs and DivX-encoded files properly?

On Friday night I was having trouble sleeping because of some pain on the right side of my chest. As pressure increased on that side, say by yawning or taking a deep breath, there was a sharp pain. I had to sleep on my back to avoid it.

Of course this happens just before the weekend. I couldn’t call the doctor until today, after several days of agony, and then was told that there were no available appointment times until Friday afternoon!

I can feel a tender spot between 2 ribs, but deep, so I didn’t get kicked or poked while I slept or anything. Mellissa thinks that I had a crossed rib. It doesn’t feel as bad today, but still bothersome. Hopefully it’s just some bruising and goes away.

Tomorrow’s my last work day before a week’s vacation. Then back to work for a week, then another week off. Since Christmas, Boxing Day and New Years all fall on the weekend, they would owe us all 3 days off in lieu, so they just decided to give us the week between Christmas and New Years off. Nice!

Unfortunately, because I’m “the guy” and get lots of questions from every department, they need to make sure the company can handle my time away. That means making sure all my tasks are complete before I leave work tomorrow, which probably means overtime (sigh).

In between tasks I’ve been working on a project using mkisofs.exe to auto-create an ISO of our software CD every time the developers perform a build, but have been having problems figuring out how to use wildcards in the path-list file. It keeps giving me errors when I try. The other option would be to list the directory in the file and follow up with exclusions, but it looks like you can’t use exclusions when you use the path-list file. Any ideas from the *nix-heads out there? I’m using a Cygwin port of mkisofs.
